Course Syllabus
Section meets Thursday from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
in Ruffner 277A.
Description
- EDLF 345 is a course specifically designed
for pre-service education majors. The seconday humanities section challenges
you to explore, within the context of your specific content area (English/Language
Arts, Social Studies or Foreign Language), the authentic integration
of various technologies into the K-12 classroom - as both instructional
and productivity tools.
- A secondary aim of EDLF 345 is to allow
you to develop your own ideas about the uses of technology. To this
end, you will be experiencing activities that utilize technology and
reading a number of articles about different uses of educational technology
and reflecting on those readings.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of EDLF 345 is to allow you to appropriately
integrate technology into your instructional and organizational activities.
Upon completion of the course, you should:
1. be aware of a number of different educational
technologies;
2. feel comfortable using those technologies for educational and organizational
purposes;
3. be able to critically evaluate the use of technology in the classroom;
4. be prepared to develop technology-enhanced instructional activities;
5. be prepared to support your students in meeting the Virginia Standards
of Learning as related to both technology and content;
6. be aware of a variety of teaching strategies and learning theories
which can be used when developing lesson plans;
7. feel more confident about your abilities to learn new technologies
to which you have not yet been exposed; and
8. be able to discuss and defend your own philosophy of technology in
education.
Prerequisites
You must be in the Curry School to enroll
in EDLF 345. You should have completed EDIS 288, which introduces fundamental
word processing skills, the use of e-mail (including the ability to
send attachments), use of the World Wide Web, and the basics of Microsoft
PowerPoint. You should also be familiar with writing educational objectives
and lesson plans. If you are not comfortable with any of these proficiencies,
you will be at a disadvantage in the course.

available via the course web site or on reserve in the education library.
Expectations and Grading
To do well in EDLF 345, you should come prepared
to all class sections and actively participate in them. You must complete
your assignments fully and turn them in on time. Assignments turned
in late (i.e., after the beginning of class on the due date) will be
penalized one point per day late. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments
must be completed individually. Each assignment should be pledged.
The grading structure of EDLF 345 is arranged
according to a point structure. You earn points for each component or
requirement of the class that you meet, and your final grade is determined
by calculating the percentage of the total possible points that you
