Class Project #1: Create a Personal Blog

Using an online blogging service (e.g. Google’s Blogger or Wordpress), create a personal blog for your TIP Internship. You will use this blog throughout the semester to track your progress through posts containing personal reflections and pictures. This blog will also allow your instructor and classmates to provide you with valuable feedback on your internship. Once created, post a link to your personal blog on the class blog.

Class Project #2: Web Start Page

Create a Web start page for yourself using Google homepage, Netvibes, MyUva, or another service of your choice. Customize the start page to include at least a link to your email, a place for bookmarks with class-related links, and two other elements of your choice (e.g., weather, a calendar, a to-do list, headlines). You must set up your start page by the due date below, and you will continue to add to it throughout the semester.

Class Project #3: Digital Images Project (choose one, other options must be approved by the instructor)

Visual narrative

    Using ONLY digital images (or scanned photos) you have taken personally, either a) tell a short narrative story or b) demonstrate how to do something:
    Acquire 5-10 imagesImport or scan them into the PCUse Photoshop Elements to “prep” them for your story i.e crop, retouchSave your finished images to a folder called “Pictures”Create a folder on your PC called “Story”Use the Web Photo Gallery of Photoshop Elements to make a web photo gallery with your images
    > Source folder is Pictures
    > Destination folder is Story
    > File extension should be .html
    > You can leave the default settings for the other itemsCreate your Photo GalleryOpen the Story folderDouble click the index.html page in your folder and test the links to make sure they workPlace the files on your university web space and post a link to the index.html page on your personal blog, or burn the files to a CD to turn in on the due date.

Photoshop Collage
    Use Photoshop to develop a collage of images on a specific subject in your content/specialization area. This collage can be an “advertisement,” a mock magazine cover, or can simply be an image that represents what a subject means to you. For example, a collage on the Louisiana Purchase might have a background of the mid-western United States, pictures of Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, Lewis and Clark, historic maps, and 2-3 bulleted lines of text. The collage should contain the following:> at least eight layers
    > at least two instances of text
    > at least one instance of a text layer effect (i.e., drop shadow or inner glow)
    > layer effects applied to at least two non-text layers (different effects for each layer)Burn the files (including the original images you used and final collage in Photoshop format) to a CD to turn in on the due date.

Flickr project
    Create an educational interactive Flickr activity using 5-10 images. Use Photoshop Elements to “prep” them for your activity i.e crop, retouch. Be sure to include directions for the activity on your Flickr site. Here’s an example from a student in EDLF 505 last year. Post a link to the project on your personal blog.

Instructional poster
    Create an instructional poster appropriate for your grade level and content area using Photoshop Elements. Refer to the Black History Month Poster example on Adobe’s Website for step-by-step instructions. Save the Photoshop file (.psd) and export 2 versions of the poster: one for printing and one for the Web.Burn the files (including the original images you used and both versions of the final poster in Photoshop format) to a CD to turn in on the due date.

Class Project #4: Web 2.0 Application Critique

Partner with one other student in the class and choose one Web 2.0 application to explore. This can be an application we talked about in class or another application you’d like to investigate (see The Best Web 2.0 Software of 2006 for some examples). Write a short critique (1-2 pages) of the application from an educator’s perspective. You should use an online word processing application (e.g. Google Docs or ZohoWriter) to work with your partner. When finished, make the papers available publicly and post a link to the class blog so that your classmates may review your work.
