PDFPrintE-mail

Undergraduates who are granted permission to enroll in the teacher education program earn two degrees: a Bachelor's from the College of Arts and Sciences and a Master of Teaching degree from the Curry School of Education. (Students in Health and Physical Education earn two degrees from Curry.) Both degrees are awarded simultaneously after all program requirements have been met.  Those who plan carefully can complete their combined program of studies in 4 1/2 years.

Applicants apply for and focus on one area listed in Program Descriptions:

a) Early Childhood Special Education,

b)Elementary Education,

c) Kinesiology (Health and Physical Education),

d) One area of secondary Education (English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Science),  OR

e)Special Education and one area of General Education: Elementary, ESL, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Mathematics, English.

Applicants to Elementary Education may focus on any area of study in the College.  Those interested in Early Childhood Special Education  must major in psychology. And those interested in one of the secondary areas must major in the content area they wish to teach.  (Health and Physical Education students major in education.) Once enrolled, it may be possible to add at least one additional area of endorsement (e.g., gifted education, ESOL, Algebra I) to a program of study. To do so, students must work closely with their Curry advisors to plan their curriculum.

Coursework in Curry is blended with clinical and school-based experiences in Charlottesville and surrounding counties.  Program completers are eligible for licensure.
