Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) - Instructional Technology
The primary objective of the Doctor of Education degree is to provide experienced educators with a broad and systematic understanding of professional education, definitive knowledge of selected aspects of educational theory and practice, the ability to conduct research and evaluation and to apply research findings in an informed and critical manner. The Ed.D. degree is the highest professional degree in education.
Course Requirements:
Students working toward an Ed.D. degree complete 54 units of course work past the bachelor's level, including the 30 unit core IT curriculum and the course work outlined below. For the dissertation, a minimum of 12 additional units are required.
- EDLF 895: Practicum (6)
- Minor-area coursework for 2 supporting minors (12 each, 24 total)
- Minor-area comprehensive exams (if required)
Master’s coursework may be used to satisfy the minor requirement, with approval of Curry faculty supervisor in that minor area.
Comprehensive Exam Requirement:
Students must successfully respond to 3 comprehensive exam questions.
Residence Requirement:
At least 24 units must be completed on grounds during a 15-month period. These units may not include credit for internships, independent study, practica, or dissertation. The residency must be met after completion of a master's degree.
Enrollment Requirement:
A student must be continuously enrolled at the University while working toward the degree and must reapply for admission into the Ed.D. program if no degree credit is earned for one year (12 months).
All requirements must be completed within four years of passing comprehensive examinations. Exceptions are made via petition only when emergency interrupts student work.
