I. Overview
Our case response will be based upon a the design of a web-based
instructional experience targeting the needs of the FAYAP students,
identified in the case. The experience will also facilitate the
creation of a positive link between the university and local farming
communities, including the FAYAP students. The focus of the
instructional experience will revolve around the introduction of a
relatively new pest management technology, called Integrated Pest
Management (IPM). The IPM information will be embedded in a case,
based upon realistic situations which provide opportunities for the
students to apply various decision-making and problem-solving strategies
relative to farm management. The formative evaluation will concentrate
upon one component case scenario, and the result will be utilized later
to expand and enhance design of further experiences. Our overriding
initiative during the response process is to continuously take each
stakeholder's needs and goals into account, to ensure an effective and
mutually satisfying product.
II. Instructional Materials
Initial Website, linking to the following:
- A copy of Stewart's PowerPoint presentation slides, for future
reference Billie's IPM information
- Joe's audio clips related to pest management and pest control issues
- Still photos (used in conjunction with audio clips)
- Video clips of interviews with local farm managers
- Web-based glossary of relevant technical terms
III. Stakeholders' Roles
Jorge
Jorge will serve as the on-site "facilitator" for the instruction and
the formative evaluation, as well. He will be responsible for gathering
a formative evaluation audience and for providing students with enough
background knowledge to get them started with the computers. Such
background knowledge would include:
- student ability to function in a Windows environment,
- student familiarity with the requisite internet skills for
using the WWW and e-mail
Jorge should consult with Stewart, to ensure that Jorge is competent
enough to provide adequate, on-going support. Jorge will also be
responsible for coordinating the FAYAP group in the production of
several video-based interviews with local farm managers on IPM-related
issues. These videos will be incorporated into the initial web-based
instructional experience.
FAYAP Students
The FAYAP students are the target audience for the design. The design
is intended to satisfy their needs, which include the following:
- alternative learning environments (ie: Random access, distributed learning)
- learning how to use various technologies technical skills,
- and terminology management techniques and models of historical perspectives
The students will be responsible for collecting video-based interviews,
which will serve as a component of the web-based case instruction.
The interviews could focus on relevant aspects of IPM that were identified
in the focus group discussion.
Joe
Joe will be responsible for the selection of relevant clips from his
archived radio shows that might offer background information relating
to IPM. Joe will select a few that apply to pest control, pest management
and/or farm management. Segments will be included as audio clips on the
web-site. Joe will also collect appropriate photgraphs that compliment
the audio clips. The audio clips will also be transcribed, and still photos
will be provided on the website, to illustrate and enhance the instructional environment.
Sam
Because of Sam's strong connections with the farming community within
Franklin county, he will be responsible for arranging interviews with local
farm managers and coordinating with Jorge and the FAYAP students. Sam
will also be responsible for teaming up with Joe, and coordinating with
the TRLC to produce transcripts of the selected audio clips for the
instructional web site.
Stewart
Stewart will be responsible for presenting a workshop for the FAYAP
students. The workshop will introduce the group to using e-mail and
accessing information via the WWW. Stewart will also serve as the
liason between the University administration, funding sources and
the project team.
Billie
Billie will serve as the main Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the IPM project,
since she has spent time gathering, validating and filtering appropriate
information. Any instruction that is developed should be designed so as
to be suitable for future use in Billie's IPM course. Billie will also serve
as an "online consultant" for the students - a person whom the students
may email for auxillary information while experiencing the case. She will
also act in conjunction with Stewart to coordinate and secure the needed
funding.
Julie
Initially, Julie will provide a flow chart to all key players - outlining the
process and roles encompassed within the IPM project. Julie will also
serve as the coordinator for the design, providing for clear communication
between all key stakeholders and producing project timelines. She should
also be in charge of coordinating the web development with the TRLC.
