"Give your name and state your business," Charlene Tyler did not look up from her burdensome task of filing...her nails.
Will sighed inwardly. He knew the routine. He was sure that she had seen him come in and certainly recognized him after the number of trips he had made to these quarters over the past two years. She probably knew his business as well. Very little got past Charlene. She was an important node on the hospital grapevine.
As gatekeeper for the Department of Human Resources, Charlene also took it as a personal responsibility to winnow out the chaff among visitors to the department. She had been known to allow certain of the unworthy to sit for hours in the waiting room without ever notifying anyone that they were there.
To be on her good side meant she would be a big help and Will had come prepared. Handing her the rose he had picked up from the gift shop, he said "Charlene, I need you. Marcia Sheridan's really going to hang me out to dry this time."
Coyly Charlene looked up at Will as she smelled the rose. Her lips slid sideways into a smirk. "Nice. Well, Will, I guess I won't let Marcia have you just yet. What can I do for you?"
"Yes!! " thought Will.
