"Life is short, the art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult." (Hippocrates)
February 1, 1997
It had been a long haul. Mike Woidohowisc had covered 635 miles since noon the previous day, pushing his new Kenworth to make Raven's Universal Truck Roost before he stopped for sleep. It was shortly after two thirty a.m. and he knew he would spot the large neon bird, a favorite landmark for truckers traveling I-14, in about ten more minutes. From the radio, Reba was crooning softly to him as he envisioned the large rare steak swimming in onions that would soon sit before him.
The light rain which had been falling for the last hour had now become nothing more than a fine mist. In the lane ahead of him there was a small imported car doing about 70. He pulled over into the left lane to blow on by when out of nowhere he saw headlights coming directly at him.
