Zero Tolerance Menu Expert Perspectives Larry's Journal
Case Analysis Steps

Principal Larry Fayerwether has asked you for your advice in this case. Please help him, by. . .

1. Reviewing his journal entries and the school and community information he has pulled together for you (see pages that follow).

2. Considering the perspectives of different people in the case. Sometimes, there are very different perspectives held by different people in a situation. When you take on the point-of-view of different individuals, you begin to understand how their perspectives are defensible, if only to them . . .;

Think about the perspectives of different people in this case. What are the people in this case thinking and feeling? Be ready to discuss the perspectives of each:

  • Principal Larry Fayerwether
  • Mrs. Wagner, mother of suspended student Laura
  • Laura Wagner, the student suspended
  • Superintendent Dorothy Summers
  • School Board Chairman Lonnie Showalter
  • Other students, teachers, and parents
  • Community Members

3. Identifying what the main issues are that emerge in this case.
(What do you need to discuss with Larry?)

4. Determining what you already know about school leadership that applies to this case. Consider the knowledge you've formed from personal experience, from published research, and from the practices advanced by relevant experts.

5. Determining what more you need to know about school leadership in order to help Larry. How could you find this out?

6. Advising Larry about how to handle the situation that exists at the close of the case. What should he do? Short-term? Longer-term? Should he stay on as principal at Gleason High?

7. Anticipating the outcomes if Larry chooses to implement your recommendations.

Finally, consider this discussion question:

8.State mandate allows school board committees discretion in the Zero Tolerance Policy. Has the school board in this case used discretion?
