Donna E. Alvermann is Research Professor of Reading Education at the
University of Georgia and
Co-Director of the National Reading Research
Center funded by the U. S. Department of Education's Office of Educational
Research and Improvement. She received her Ph.D. in reading education from
Syracuse University after teaching for 12
years in the public schools of
New York and Texas.
Her research focuses on the role of classroom discussion in content literacy instruction. Recently, she has begun to explore the potential of feminist pedagogy and poststructural theory for interpreting literacy practices in middle and high school classrooms.
She is a past-president of the National Reading Conference and has served on a number of professional organizations' advisory boards. Her work has been published in Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Reading Behavior, Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and other literacy journals. A chapter on secondary reading the second volume of the Handbook of Reading Research is the basis for a new book she is editing on Reconceptualizing Adolescent Literacy. She is also working on the second edition of her co-authored book, Content Reading and Literacy: Succeeding in Today's Diverse Classrooms.
