Professor Estes is co author (with Joseph Vaughan) of Reading and Learning in the Content Classroom, 2nd edition (1985) and Reading and Reasoning Beyond the Primary Grades (1986), both published by Allyn & Bacon. A new version of this book is under development. He is co-author (with Mary Alice Gunter and Jan Schwab) of Instruction: A Models Approach, 2nd edition (1995), also published by Allyn & Bacon. He is a consulting editor and contributor to Study Power, published by World Book Publishers (1994).

His research interests encompass the pedagogy of reading, attitudes toward reading and subject area study, study skills and comprehension of textbooks. His currently consuming project is the construction of a hypertext dictionary of core concepts in science. A prototype of this document is scheduled for review on the web in the fall of 1995.

Tom and his wife, Julie, live in Keswick, Virginia. Their children are away from home now, 2 in college, 1 running her own business. To assuage the empty nest, they enjoy 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 3 horses. Tom's participatory sport is riding after hounds with the Keswick Hunt Club, of which he is currently president of the board of governors.
