Elizabeth Moje

Elizabeth B. Moje is an assistant professor at the University of Utah. Moje began her career in education teaching high school biology, general science, history, and government. After 3 years of teaching in a regular high school setting, she began teaching alternative high school and adult literacy courses while working toward a Master's degree in reading education. After finishing her Master's degree and teaching literacy classes in these alternative settings for 4 years, she went on to pursue a doctorate in literacy and language education at Purdue University.

Moje studies the sociocultural contexts of literacy teaching and learning. She has a special interest in how secondary school disciplines and classroom interactions shape literacy practices. She has conducted several studies of secondary literacy teaching and learning in the last five years. For example, she spent two years studying how and why literacy was used in a high school chemistry classroom. She is currently engaged in a study of writer's workshop in a seventh-grade English classroom at an urban junior high school. In the study, she is focusing on what the teacher and students believe about school literacy (especially in English class). She is examining how those beliefs and their interactions shape the way writer's workshop is used in the classroom. In addition, she and the classroom teacher are collaborating on the teaching and research. As a result, they are also studying the process of collaborative teaching and research.
