Objectives:
The students will:
1. Explain the importance of libraries in general, and of the Library of Congress in particular.
2. Formulate and ask appropriate questions at the Library of Congress.
3. Participate in group discussions concerning the field trip.
4. Develop an appreciation for the Library of Congress, its beautiful architecture,
and its impressive collections.
5. Understand the concept of the ownership of ideas and the related concept of copyright.
The Library of Congress is often considered to be the nation's library. Today, it is
a working library which serves all branches of the federal government. libraries
throughout the nation, as well as scholars and researchers who wish to utilize its
vast resources. In addition, the Library is often visited by those who are interested in its
special collections, displays, concerts, and departments. Special exhibitions, including
a permanent display of a Gutenberg bible, make the Library a favorite tourist attraction. The Office of Copyright Protection is located in the Library of Congress and
exhibits interesting materials. Also, many original manuscripts of historical, literary,
and musical importance are displayed. In addition, the architecture of the Jefferson Building is magnificent.
Pre-Visit Activities:
1. Discussion of the "Founding Fathers" (their lives, writings, philosophies, and
contributions to our society)
2. Discussion of the purposes of libraries, in general, and of the Library of Congress
in particular.
3. Formulation of appropriate questions to be asked upon the site visit.
4. Discussion of the concept of the ownership of ideas and the related concept of
copyright.
On-Site Activities:
1. View slide presentation. (Ground floor of Jefferson Building)
2. Break into groups of under twenty-five people and take 45 minute guided tour.
3. Visit the Copyright Office and its exhibits.
Follow-Up Activities:
1. Class discussion will be held concerning the field trip.
2. Students will collect and post news articles concerning the Library of Congress.
3. Discussions will be held comparing the Library of Congress classification system
to that of the Dewey Decimal System.
4. Students will answer an essay question on an exam dealing with the importance of
libraries, in particular the Library of Congress.
5. Class discussions will be held on the importance of copyright.
6. Students will be expected to observe copyright restrictions in all class work.
