Poetry as a Fine Art

Instructional Unit:
The on-site lesson will have the students go through each section of the National Gallery of Art. They will choose one picture from each section and write descriptive words.

Curriculum Unit:
Grade 6
Language Art

Objectives:
The learner will:
1. Choose at least five pictures, sculptures, etc. to describe based upon personal preference.
2. List descriptive words in reaction to the chosen artwork.
3. Write a descriptive paragraph about one artwork.
4. Write a Haiku based upon one artwork.
5. Purchase a postcard of a favorite artwork.
6. Touch available artwork and describe texture.

Pre-Visit Activities:
1. Discuss artwork in Vistas (reading text). The students will then discuss why the publishers insert specific pictures with certain stories and the contributions.
2. The students will be exposed to various types of artwork through pictures. Books, slides, etc. may be the best method of accomplishing this task.

On-Site Activities:
1. As a class, the students will brainstorm descriptive words when viewing the artwork.
2. Using this brainstorm list, each student will write a descriptive paragraph about the artwork.

Follow-Up Activities:

1. Afterwards, each student will brainstorm descriptive words without the use of artwork.
2. Students will draw a picture based upon the brainstorm list from the previous activity.
3. As a class, we will read and discuss Haiku.
4. Each student will then write a Haiku based upon the method of brainstorming with the use of a purchased postcard of art.
