Growing and Harvesting Fruits and Vegetables

Instructional Unit:
The students will participate in various lessons/ activities including the planting
and harvesting of fruits and vegetables.
Curriculum Unit:
Grade Preschool
Science
Objectives:
Students will:
1. Identify various parts of a farm in story books (i.e. fields, garden, orchard,
wooded land).
2. Match fruits and vegetables to the location where they would grow on the
farm.
3. Have been read various books about farms.
4. Focus on parts of the farm that what is grown on each part from the book
discussions.
5. Identify 80% of the parts of a plant (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit.
when shown a picture of a fruit producing plant.
6. Dictate and illustrate an original story about what they would do during
a day if they lived and worked on a farm.
Pre-Visit Activities:
Note: Teacher must request literature and map provided by
Claude Moore Colonial Farm.
1. Students will have read many books about farms and farming.
2. Story book discussions will focus on parts of the farm and what is grown
on those parts.
On-Site Activities:
1. Students will name 80% of the fruits and vegetables grown on the farm when
they are physically displayed.
2. Students will classify six different fruits and/or vegetables by where they
grow (i.e., on a tree, under the ground, on a plant).
3. Students will demonstrate the proper sequence fro planting seeds and/ or
seedlings in trays.
Follow-Up Activities:
1. Students will daily tend to their plants and observe germination and growth.
2. Students will be read books about plants and plant growth.
3. Students will dictate and illustrate original stories about living and working
on a farm.
