The Farm

Instructional Unit:
Each part of the curriculum will be immersed with farm information and experiences,
and the children will have first hand experience with farm related activities.
This unit of study will take one month to study. We will be studying The Farm,
culminating with a field trip to a farm.
Curriculum Unit:
Grade K
Science
Objectives:
1. Brainstorm with the children and make a chart with their comments "What
I Think I Know About Farms."
2. Read farm books to familiarize students with the difference between farms
and cities.
3. Map the areas of a farm and let children use their own toys from home. Let
them build farm yards with blocks.
4. Classify farm animals verses other animals and explain why.
5. Make farm puppets.
6. Learn the names of adult and baby animals.
7. Look at farm equipment and explain the uses for it.
8. Play a xylophone using color codes of "Old McDonald".
9. Use measurement to measure a picture of a barn, door, roof, sides.
10. Read Oh Lovely Mud...Mrs. Wishy Washy, and let students make
a variation for a "big book" in our classroom.
11. Read Who Took The Farmer's Hat . Give students a hat shape
and let them create their own hats.
12. Exercise to the record Chicken Fat .
13. Plant bean seeds and study the parts of the plant

On-Site Activities:
1. Each child will be given a map of important land objects to look for.
2. Parents will be given a worksheet to use with the children. Parents are asked
to record quotes from each of the children in their group.
Follow-Up Activities:
1. Brainstorm with the students and make a chart with their comments "What
I Learned About Farms" and compare it with the first chart written at the
beginning of the unit.
2. Write a story in book form using the quotes parents wrote down during the
trip. Have photos that were taken developed and give each child a photo to hold.
As I read the story I wrote using their quotes and names, students will decide
which page their photo should be placed on. Each student will receive a copy
of the book and will create a unique cover page.
