Instructional Unit:
Life on a Colonial Farm. (George Washington's Birthplace)

Curriculum Unit:
Grade 3
Social Studies

Objectives:
1. The students will be able to describe different items found at George Washington's birthplace.
2. The students will be able to describe life on a colonial farm.

Pre-Visit Activities:
1. Go over the information sent from the National Park Service about George Washington's Birthplace.
2. Read about George Washington's boyhood.
3. Read about life on a colonial farm.

On-Site Activities:
1. See the film, A Childhood Place , at the Visitor's Center.
2. Tour the grounds in groups of 25-30 people. The groups will see the memorial house, the kitchen, the textile house, and the farm. At each site, there is a guide (dressed in colonial fashion) who tells about the building or farm.

Follow-Up Activities:
1. Discuss the field trip. Ask students how life on a colonial farm is different from how they live.
2. Write about what it would have been like to live on a colonial farm.
