The Academic Community
Thomas
Jefferson conceived the University of Virginia
as an “academical village” in which
students and faculty live and work together,
fostering a sense of community among scholars.
Jefferson's design, consisting of ten pavilions
on a central lawn, has been designated by the American
Institute of Architects as the one of the “outstanding
architectural achievements in America.” Representative
faculty members and students continue to live side-by-side
in pavilions facing the central lawn. |
The IT Community
The
IT program is conceived in the tradition of Jefferson’s
vision. Each entering cohort works together as
a team on leading-edge projects and initiatives,
and they attend core classes together. The team-based
approach develops collaborative skills required
for success after graduation, but also fosters
a sense of shared experience.
Our IT community extends beyond the classroom--Spaghetti
dinners at the program director’s
home on Thurday evenings
offer even more opportunities to network
and build friendships. |
The
Charlottesville Community
UVA
is located in Charlottesville, Virginia,
among the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains.
Charlottesville has been designated in the past
as the “most
livable city in America” with good reason.
The city is a few minutes away from the Appalachian
trail to the west and within easy driving distance
of Washington, D.C. to the east. A highlight of
Charlottesville is its downtown
pedestrian mall.
It is a popular spot to enjoy a cappuccino or meet
friends, featuring cinemas, restaurants, and independent
bookstores that encourage leisurely browsing. |
