A+ Math - Games, Flashcards and a homework helper are all offered on this student-friendly web-site. Although most of the focus is on earlier math, there is some Algebra I material (check out the square roots and algebra flashcard sections). This site also has value as a resource for remedial materials. Academy Curricular Exchange: Mathematics Intermediate (6-8) - The OFCN's resource of math lesson plans, this site includes some novel ideas for applying algebra skills. Algebra Wizard - This site provides access to a free monthly E-zine devoted entirely to algebra (for teachers, parents and students) as well as opportunities to buy algebra-related products. Ask Dr. Math - Dr. Math really does seem to know it all. This wonderful reference tool provides answers to frequently asked math questions, as well as a means for students to e-mail Dr. Math with their own, as of yet unanswered questions. Blue Web'n Learning Sites Library - This is a massive and well-organized database of resources ranging from tutorials and lessons, to activities and projects. Brain Teasers - This competitive web-site allows students to get involved in problem solving and submit their answers. The teasers are broken down according to grade level. Center for Technology and Teacher Education - This University of Virginia's Curry School web-site includes links to a variety of math-related topics. Use this site to find data for math class, links to history of math materials, interactive math links and a geometry geometer sketchpad. A Commonwealth of Knowledge - Virginia's leading lady, Roxanne Gilmore has unveiled this state-sanctioned web-site. It contains a wide scope of school-related odds n' ends, including a set of lesson plans and a "First Lady's Spotlight Tour". Cool Math - This funky yet useful site is packed with pertinent information-from Pythagorean identities to a variety of mini-tutorials. Be sure to check out the "How to Succeed in Math" link. edHelper.com - This diverse site has a huge catalog of lesson plans and WebQuests (including algebra). But if you go straight to the lesson plans you'll miss some other nifty features. A frequently updated education headline section links to relevant articles and the site also offers free software to put your classes online! ENC - The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse is a huge, well-organized site that houses a wealth of useful information for teachers. This link is to the Algebra activities offered by the ENC. Like VARC, this portion of ENC offers links to sites that are Algebra-specific. ExploreMath.com - We've been linked to this site from our Interactive page for some time now, but ExploreMath is much more than just interactive graphs. Lesson plans, activities, discussion groups and more are all available. You do need to "join" ExploreMath to access the good stuff, but it is free! The Gateway to Educational Materials - A massive, well-organized cache of lesson plans resides at this user-friendly web-site. To get to the good stuff enter algebra as a keyword and check the corresponding boxes for grades 8,9 and 10. Helping Your Child Learn Math -This is a great site to share with your students' parents. It includes math-related games that parents can play with their children (on trips, at the grocery store, around the house, and more!) as well as insightful accounts of what goes on in math classes. Although it's not Algebra specific, parents will find this site useful. The MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive - (created by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of St. Andrews Scotland) Although much of this remarkably well-organized site's content is beyond Algebra I, this site is still a potentially useful resource. From cutting edge articles to brief biographies on all major and many minor mathematicians, this is the place to go if you need to know anything about math. Check out the "Quotations" section...my quick search found 18 quotes on algebra alone! Find creative ways to work some classic quotes into your lessons. Math Archives - This site offers access to many calculator/software sites, as well as providing a database of other teacher resources and lessons. Math File - Check out this fairly involved online, math-related game. It might make a fun reward or extension activity. Also, it creates plenty of data to interpret or graph. Math Help: Professor Freedman - Professor Freedman teaches algebra in a community college setting and this is her class web-site. It contains a variety of materials, including tips for improving study skills and overcoming math anxiety, as well as student-created tutorials. Math League: Introduction to Algebra - A wide range of algebraic ideas are briefly and clearly explained at this beginner-oriented site. Topics include: simplifying equations, combining like terms, and word problems. Math Lesson Plans - A batch of math plans for grades 6-12 Mathematical Backgrounds - This site provides a wallpaper generator based on mathematical formulas. The code is proprietary so it's not possible to see just what formulas are at work, but this fun activity could lead to a discussion of how mathematics is involved in this process. Mathscribe - This downloadable (and free) dynamic graphing and modeling software is applicable for concepts from prealgeba thru precalculus. The site also offers computer lab assignments and suggests ways to implement this software in the classroom. MSTE Lessons Database - This aptly titled web-site is a well-organized source for math lessons. It is provided by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. This links directly to their algebra activities section. NCTM Standards for Algebra (Grades 6-8) - The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics site offers a host of information explaining and supporting their vision of math education. NCTM Standards for Algebra (Grades 9-12) -The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics site offers a host of information explaining and supporting their vision of math education. New Math Teachers - A wonderful resource for new and experienced math teachers alike, this web-site provides a variety of helpful information in the arena of math teaching. Principles and Standards for School Mathematics - The NCTM's groundbreaking document is offered in its entirety at this site. While it is much broader than just Algebra I, it has much to offer all teachers of math. Be sure to check out the electronic and interactive example section. Project Interactive - Lessons, activities, discussions, and tools are included in this useful web-site. Although the primary focus is on middle school math, much of its content is relevant in the Algebra I classroom as well. Purple Math - This one-stop shopping center for all things algebra-related includes a large batch of tutorials offered in understandable language, general homework tips, links to other algegbra sites and much more. Quia Math - This cross-referenced site houses a sizable batch of interesting and novel math activities. Be sure to check out the equations version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the algebra vocabulary word search and much more! Schoolhouse - This is the home of Encarta's lesson collection, which includes a fairly large batch of math lessons, referenced by subject as well as approximate grade level. SOS Mathematics - A large number of lessons and related practice problems are cataloged in this detailed web-site. Use it as a re-teaching or self-tutorial mechanism for students. Suzanne's Lesson Plans - This Algebra-specific batch of lesson plans was created by a math educator who taught middle school math and currently works for the Math Forum at Swarthmore. Teachers First - Sure this site has the requisite lesson plan database (and a good one, at that!), but it also has some unique offerings. Don't miss the section on classroom humor, and teacher time savers. Virginia Blueprint for the Algebra I SOL Test - This guide for teachers, parents and students offers information about how the SOL tests are constructed, as well as specific information regarding the makeup of the Algebra I test. Virginia DOE: SOL Instruction, Training,and Assessment Resources - Here's the goods right from the horse's mouth. Scroll down to the "Mathematics SOL Resources" section for a bevy of useful information. Webquest - A variety of interdisciplinary activities are presented on this web-site. The activities are designed to be of interest to students and involve a variety of applied concepts. WWW4Teachers - The focus of this University of Kansas site is the promotion of technology in education. Yes, it includes some stellar examples of the introduction of computers into effective classroom activities. |
