  1. Analyze the role of geography in the organization, settlement, and diffusion of the Jamestown colony.

  2. Compare and contrast the motivations of competing European powers--namely Spain, England, and France-- for colonial settlement, activity and expansion.

  3. Compare and contrast the institutions, social framework, and colonial relationships of competing European powers.

  4. Describe life and society in Virginia before 1607, as well as it's subsequent transformation upon arrival of the Europeans.

  5. Assess the influence of European colonization on indigenous tribes in Virginia and the New World.

  6. Identify distinguishing characteristics of colonies in the New World founded by various European powers.

  7. Describe the founding, struggles, life and successes of the colonists attempting to establish and develop the Jamestown colony.

  8. Theorize on the importance of Jamestown within the English colonial framework.

  9. Identify major historical figures involved in the development of Jamestown, and estimate their relative significance in the founding, establishment, and success of the colony.

  10. Compare popular myths held about Jamestown with primary source accounts and historical scholarship.
