This is a very useful website for information on the Jamestown colony. It provides a brief overview of the history of the colony as well as listing of the first settlers and their occupation before they arrived in Jamestown.
Bridenbaugh, Carl. Jamestown 1544-1699. England: Oxford University Press, 1980.
This book maps out the Jamestown chronology from 1544 to 1699. It begins with the English invasion and goes on to the stories of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. The author presents a brief yet detailed narrative of the evolution of the government in the colony, Bacon's Rebellion, and failure of the colony.
Brinkley, Alan. American History, A Survey of American History. New York: McGraw-Hill Publishing, 1991.
This is a textbook used by many high schoolers in their junior year across the state of Virginia. The book covers U.S. history with a conveniently placed background on Virginia.
Crane, Wesley Frank. Dissolution of Virginia Company: The Failure of a Colonial Experience England: Oxford University Press, 1932.
This book is based on a collection of two volumes of Virginia Company records of the dissolution. This affords an interesting study of the various influences and pitfalls to which these historical writings describe. The issues discussed include: The rapidly growing independence and colonial self-confidence and resentment of the English government, Failures and bankruptcy, Accounts, Tobacco contracts and the Royal investigations that follow.
Dabney, Virginius. Virginia: The New Dominion. Charlottesville:University Press of Virginia, 1983.
Dabney offers a relatively rich history of Virginia. However, only 6 out of the 39 chapters cover the history of Jamestown
Dodson, Leonidas. Alexander Spotswood. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1932.
Though Spotswood served as Virginia's governor in the early years of the 18th century, the second chapter in the book specifically outlines the roles and responsibilities of a colonial governor.
Dollar, Charles M. and Reichard, Gary W. American Issues: A Documentary Reader. New York: Random House, 1988.
This textbook is designed to supplement American History high school textbooks. It contains a selection of excerpts from more than two hundred original sources. Included among these sources are documents, commentary, and interpretations of critical events or processes in American history, and visual material.

Morton, Richard L. Colonial Virginia: Volume 1 The Tidewater Period, 1607-1710. Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1960.
Morton presents the most extensive and insightful source on the history of Jamestown. This is where I learned most of the details behind the important events of the colony.

National Cyclopaedia of American Biography Vol. XIII. New York: James T.White and Company, 1906.
Though this is a very old source, it provides fairly rich sketches of historical figures. Volume XIII contains Virginia's colonial governors. This is where one could obtain much of the biographical information on the governors.
