Before you embark on your research, please keep in mind to be sure to reflect the conditions of the time period, and to divide the task among each team member. Remember, you want to convince the governor the significance of your religion and why it is the one that best suits the colony. Once he accepts, he will include these rights in his laws in regarding the rule of Jamestown.

  1. Divide the class into three or four separate groups. Each group will represent the following people group in Jamestown:

    • the English colonists who came to Jamestown on a business venture,
    • the Africans, and
    • the indigenous Native Americans.

  2. Brainstorm and list the important fundamental beliefs that define the religion, and other types of information that would be helpful in writing up your document. It should describe the needs and justification for these religious liberties to be granted by the governor.

  3. Decide as a group on how to outline your document. Start with these three guidelines:

    • Organize the introduction,
    • Support the introduction with solid, factual evidence from the resources,
    • End with a strong conclusion that your group firmly believes in.

  4. Using the resources available on the Internet, answer the following questions as a guideline for writing your document:

    • What is the history of the religion?
    • Why is religion important during this time period?
    • How does one become a member of this group?
    • Describe the culture of your group. How does the culture, language, and lifestyle of the group affect the faith of the religion?
    • What are your views towards the other races?
    • Have other religions influenced the doctrine or beliefs of your religion?
    • What type of interactions does your group have with the other groups?
    • What are some struggles your group faces at Jamestown?
    • How do these struggles on life in Jamestown affect your view on religion?
    • What solution does your doctrine offer for these struggles?

    Guidelines in writing the document:

    • Be sure to be concise and to the point. Length of document should be one page.
    • Have a clear introduction , strong support, and strong conclusion.
    • Use correct grammar and check for spelling errors.
    • There must be evident use of Internet resources.
  5. When your group is finished writing the document, make copies of each document for each student. You should obtain copies of all three document and thoroughly read through them before going on to the next step.

  6. Critical Thinking Activity: Socratic Seminar
    (The class responds to a question by the teacher concerning the text that has been read. The students participate in a discussion. The seminar is based on the ideas and contributions of the students in response to the initial question.)
    Remember to keep the following suggestions in minds during the discussion:

    • Support your position
    • Cite evidence from the Internet sources
    • Disagree with the other classmates' reasoning
    • Ask questions

    The governor (the teacher) asks, "Which religion best suits our new colony and to what extent shall we enforce it in Jamestown?"

    Discuss and address the issues that support your justification so that the governor will grant your groups' religious liberties. Evaluate the options and make decisions on the evidence.
